1) 세포벽의 일반적 특성
- 대부분의 세균에서 세포막 바깥쪽에 있는 구조물

세포에서 방출되거나 흡수되는 물질은 원형질막(plasma membrane)을 통과해야만 한다.
세포는 기능적인 특징에 따라 크기가 다양하지만 대부분의 마이크로미터 단위로, 육안으로 확인하기는 거의 불가능하므로 현미경으로 관찰해야 한다.
